SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The Husky men's golf team left Pasatiempo Golf Course on Sunday thinking they had shot 1-over 351 in the final round of play to leapfrog three teams and end up third at the 67th Annual Western Intercollegiate.

Instead, once Coach Chris Williams reached the airport they discovered that Williams had signed his scorecard incorrectly. This led to a final round disqualification for Williams and a drop in the team standings from third to fourth.
Williams' initial score was recorded as 1-over 71, but he mistakenly signed for a par 4 instead of a bogey 5 on the 7th hole. The Huskies were forced to throw out Williams' 72 and count Trevor Simsby's 77, which changed UW's third round score to 7-over 357 and the team's final total to 1085 (+35).
Stanford was able to claim third with a three round total of 1081 (+31) and Williams was denied what could have been a seventh-place finish.
Williams fired 68 on Friday and 70 on Saturday.
"It's a bummer ending for what was a really good day for the team, especially for Gerrit (Chambers)," a disappointed Thurmond said.
"I know that it was a really good day and I don't want that to take too much away, but it was an unfortunate ending to the day."
Until the sudden disqualification of Williams, the story of the day for the Huskies was the stellar play of little-used Gerrit Chambers. Forced into action because of the play-six, count-five format of the tournament, the junior had four birdies over the final five holes to tie for low round of the day with a 66.
"I was so thrilled at the end; those last three holes he birdied," Thurmond said of Chambers' round, which included eight total birdies. "He was 1 under par and I was just hoping that he would be able to finish strong. In my mind I am thinking, `if he could keep it under par' and he comes in and birdied the last three holes and shoots 4 under.
"We were just super excited for him."
Chambers ended up with a three-day total of 217 (+7) and tied for 23rd.
Cheng-Tsung Pan had the best finish among Huskies. He totaled 2-over 212, including an even-par 70 on Sunday. He tied for 12th.
Joining Chambers with a score of 217 was Charlie Hughes. He capped one of his most consistent performances of the season with a final round 71.
Freshman Jonathan Sanders shot a final round 73 to finish with a total of 224 (+14). He tied for 48th.
Simsby tied for 78th overall with a 233.
Top-ranked California took home the team title after finishing one stroke over par at 1051. The Bears had three players shoot in the 60's on Sunday to highlight a final round of 10-under 340.
UCLA was second at +14, followed by Stanford.
The Huskies ended up five shots clear of fifth-place San Diego State.
UCLA's Pedro Figueiredo won medalist honors by finishing two shots clear of the field. He tallied a total of 204 (-6).
This marked the Huskies final tune up before the Pac-12 Championships, April 29 through May 1 at Los Angeles Country Club. Thurmond feels his team will be right where they need to be by the time the conference gathers together.
"We want a couple of goods weeks of practice to get ready," he said, "but I'm confident that our team is going to play well down there."
