Entering week two with a new attitude in the gym, the Huskies look to erase week one's score of 193.500 and get back into the top 18 where teams are averaging 195.00.
Senior co-captains Paige Bixler (Rowlett, Texas) and Lauren Rogers (Plains, Pa.) hope to re-focus the Dawgs and have a good meet at home against No. 17 California, UC Davis and Illinois-Chicago (UIC) on Friday at 7 p.m. It will be just one of four home meets on the year for the Huskies.
Cal will be the first Pac-12 opponent on the season for the Huskies. The Golden Bears won their first two meets on the season with a 195.425 mark at a Quad Meet they hosted on Jan. 6 and a dual meet victory last week over UC Davis with a 194.575. They are 17th in the country with a 195.000 average.
UC Davis ranks 45th with a 191.913 average and posted a season-best 192.425 last week vs. Cal. Michelle Ho posted a 9.925 on floor last week, the fourth best mark in UC Davis history.
Like the Huskies, UIC has competed in one meet on the season and fell to Penn State last week with a 191.700. Catherine Dion was an individual event winner in the meet, tying for first on beam with a 9.825.
This week the Huskies will also host a special fundraising event for local club gymnast, Jacoby Miles at the meet. Miles was injured at practice over a month ago and has begun the recovery process for a spinal cord injury. Together, we can all sympathize and support this incredible young woman and her family as they move forward with her therapy. There will be an opportunity to donate and purchase Jacoby t-shirts, hair bands, wrist bands, and Melanie Roach's book, "Lift." All proceeds will go to the Team Jacoby Fund.
