ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Chris Williams fired a 1-under 69 and the Huskies shot 9-over 289 and are eight strokes off the team lead after the first round of the Ping-Golfweek Preview in Alpharetta, Ga.
Washington, ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll by Golfweek, finished day one at Capital City Club outside of Atlanta tied for 8th with California.
The collection of teams competing this week features 14 of Golfweek's preseason top-25 ranked squads. The tournament is held each year at the site of the NCAA Championship and invites many of the teams expected to contend for the national title at the end of the season.
"The course is nice and in really great shape," Husky Coach Matt Thurmond said of the 7,246-yard Crabapple Course. "It is a very long course and the Bermuda rough is high."
A pair of teams from out west occupy the top of the team leaderboard after Sunday's first round, led by UNLV at +1. UCLA is one stroke off the lead at +2 and sits alone in second.
Third place at 7-over is shared by three teams: New Mexico, host Georgia Tech and San Diego State. Georgia and Arkansas each shot 8-over and hold a one stroke lead over Washington.

"It was just a start," is how Thurmond summed up Sunday's nondescript first round. "There were a couple of teams that were a little better than everyone else, but it's still early.
"I will have a better feel for where we are after tomorrow."
Williams, the current No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, remained his usual self on the course despite still recovering from mono. The senior All-American had two bogeys and three birdies during the round, including one on the par-4 18th hole.
Just six golfers went under par on the day, led by San Diego State's Tom Berry who fired 3-under 67. Three golfers finished at 2-under, while Williams and UCLA's Pedro Figueiredo were the only golfers at -1.
Cheng-Tsung Pan, coming off taking home medalist honors on Tuesday at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational and Cornhole Championship, was second among Huskies after shooting 2-over 72. He was 1-under through 12 holes, but three bogeys down the stretch pushed him all the way to 26th on the leaderboard.
The Huskies other three golfers -- Charlie Hughes, Trevor Simsby and Gerrit Chambers -- each shot 4-over 74. They are tied for 46th out of the 75-player field.
Tomorrow's second round starts at 9:00 a.m. ET for the Huskies.
