Freshman Juilfs Finishes 13th At NCAA Outdoors

DES MOINES, Iowa - Friday at the NCAA Track & Field Championships was a one-man show for Washington, as freshman J.J. Juilfs competed in his first national meet. The Pac-12 Champion cleared the first three bars, but a couple near misses kept him just out of the mix of contenders, and he wound up 13th overall.
Juilfs, the rookie from Eugene, Ore., came in on a good run, having won the Pac-12 title then followed it up with a perfect series at West Prelims in Austin. He came in at the opening height of 16-4 ¾ and cleared it with one attempt. Things got a little nervewracking at the next bar, however, as Juilfs needed a third attempt to get over 16-10 ¾.
Moving up to 17-4 ½, Juilfs vaulted over that bar on his first try, moving up to seventh overall as the field dwindled to 16 competitors. But at 17-8 ½, Juilfs was unable to clear. His second and third attempts saw him get well over the bar but hit it with his chest on the way down and dislodge the bar.
Juilfs will earn All-America Second Team honors for the finish, making him the sixth men's vaulter to earn All-America honors under assistant coach Pat Licari.
The Championships conclude for Washington tomorrow with sophomores Katie Flood and Megan Goethals looking to get on the podium. Flood will run the 1,500-meters final at 11:28 a.m. Central time, while Goethals will run the 5,000-meters final at 12:19 p.m. Central. The meet will be televised live on ESPNU.
