STOCKTON, Calif. - Sophomore Bryana Walker pitched her first collegiate career no-hitter in a 12-0 five-inning victory over Delaware in game two of the day at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
Walker allowed just three base runners, one that was walked, one that got hit by a pitch and another on a Husky error in 5.0 innings. It was the 27th no-hitter in UW history and the first by a pitcher on the current Husky roster. The last UW no-hitter came from Danielle Lawrie who threw an 8-0 no-hitter vs. Stanford on May 7, 2012. It is the first non-conference no-hitter since Lawrie took out Auburn 5-0 on March 11, 2010.
The Huskies improved to 16-1 on the year with two wins on the day, also defeating Sacramento State, 9-0 in five innings in game one. Delaware is now 3-9 on the year.
The La Quinta, Calif., native, Walker is 3-1 in the circle and had eight strikeouts in the game. Chenxi Jiao was the pitcher of record for the Blue Hens and is now 0-3 on the year. She allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 12 hits in 3.1 innings. Brianna Jennings allowed two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings in relief.
"We had two dominant pitching performances between Kaitlin (Inglesbly) and Bryana," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Today we played with two extremely different offensive lineups and had some nice contributions all around."
UW had 16 hits, 12 runs and 10 RBI in the game. The Huskies scored three times in the first, had a huge fourth inning scoring seven runs and then scored two more in the fifth.
Eight different Huskies had hits in the game, led by sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) with three each. Four other Huskies had two hits in the game.
Hayward singled to lead off the game. Freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) singled and the runners advanced on the throw. A single by Williams drove in the first run of the game. Sophomore Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) would also singled driving in Souza. The third run of the inning scored on an illegal pitch after junior Lindsay Monk (Menifee, Calif.) popped out which would've been out No. 3.
In the top of the fourth UW had its biggest inning of the season, scoring seven runs. Hayward single to second and advanced to second on the throw. Freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) scored on a muffed throw by the catcher. Williams hit a two-RBI single down the left field line as Hayward and sophomore Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored. Fa'asua singled to left field as Souza scored the fourth run in the inning. A three-run home run by freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) put UW up 10-0.
Hayward led off the fifth with a triple and scored on single to left by Souza. A triple by Williams drove in Souza for the final run.
The Huskies will face the host Pacific Tigers on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. UW will then play at either 2:30 p.m. or 4:45 p.m., depending on what seed they end up with after the first round of games.
