MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Trailing 2-1 midway through singles play, the middle of the Husky singles lineup stepped up and posted three straight wins to secure a 4-3 win over a tough William & Mary squad at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center. The 28th-ranked Huskies improve to 2-1 and will face the Gophers on Sunday.
The Tribe, ranked 50th nationally, took the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead, though freshmen Natali Coronel and Riko Shimizu earned their first dual match win of the year at No. 3 doubles, winning 9-7 over Hope Johnson and Katie Kargl.
Seniors Denise Dy and Samantha Smith then posted straight set wins at the top two singles matches to bring the Huskies back. Dy steamrolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jeltje Loomans, surpassing Claire Carter for sole possession of fourth on the UW career wins list with her 92nd. Smith then got her first dual singles win of the season with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Marlen Mesqarzadeh.
At 2-2, UW pulled away in a couple three setters to clinch. Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic moved up to No. 3 singles today and won the first and third sets over Maria Belaya for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win. At fourth singles, freshman Capucine Gregoire also shook off a second set hiccup to top Hope Johnson, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
Coronel dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match at fifth singles to Anik Cepeda, and freshman Julija Lukac came up just short in a marathon three setter, as Kargl won 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) in the last match of the day.
