Husky golfers scorecards
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - On a day when many scores were extremely low at the Kings' Course on the Big Island of Hawai'i, the Husky Men's Golf team kicked off the first round of their spring by firing a blistering 13-under 275 at the Ameri Ari Invitational. The score on the Waikoloa course was nearly a historic round for the Huskies, but was only low enough to leave them tied for second in the team standings.
Their first round net of -13 ties them with UCLA, but both Pac-12 school are looking up the leaderboard at top-ranked Texas, which fired an 18-under 270 on Wednesday. A third Pac-12 school - USC - is fourth at -12. Georgia Tech at -10 is the only other team out of the 20 participating universities that is double-digits under par.
Freshman Cheng-Tsung Pan, the world's No. 9 ranked amateur, led the way for the Huskies on day one and is currently tied for the 54-hole tournament lead. Pan shot a masterful 6-under 66 that featured seven birdies and just one bogey. He shares the lead with Stanford's Patrick Grimes and UCLA's Pontus Widegren.
A pair of Huskies are two strokes back of Pan and tied for 11th. Junior All-American Chris Williams and sophomore Trevor Simsby each shot 68.
Williams, who is ranked 6th in the world amateur rankings, had a consistent day that was highlighted by an eagle-3 on the par-5 fourteenth hole. He only slipped up once, carding a bogey on the par-3 third hole.
Simsby was on his way to an impeccable round before a pair of bogeys blemished his scorecard. He bounced back nicely though with birdies on two of his last three holes to end the day at -4.
Junior Charlies Hughes shot a 1-over 73 and sophomore Cory McElyea shot 74.
Hughes had a roller coaster round that featured an eagle on No. 14, five birdies, three bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey. He is tied for 62nd out of 115 golfers.
McElyea had five birdie and five bogeys during his round, but also had to count a double-bogey seven on the par-5 eighteenth hole. He is tied for 71st.
The second round shotgun start begins at 7:30 Hawai'i time on Thursday with the Huskies teeing off on holes one through three.
