ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- It wasn't easy, but the Husky men's golf team gritted out an eighth-place finish at the U.S. Collegiate Championship this week.
No. 3 Washington was back with all its horses in the stable at The Golf Club of Georgia, but one of its stars -- No. 1 ranked amateur Chris Williams -- was less than full strength battling mono.
Sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan and junior Trevor Simsby stepped up their games and proved to be more than capable of filling the void left by their sick teammate. The Dawgs were able to ride on the shoulders of Pan, who notched his fourth finish of second or better in four tournaments, and Simsby, who followed up a win in the Pac-12 Preview with a top-five finish this week.
Pan shot 2-under 70 to end up 3 under for the tournament and tied for second with a pair of golfers. As good as Pan was, Simsby was even better on Sunday. The junior shot 3-under 69 and ended up tied for fifth, two shots back of Pan.
Both Simsby and Pan had just one bogey in the final round.

"I'm really happy for both of them," Coach Matt Thurmond said of his duo. "Both of them hit really good balls and they finished well today."
Williams returned to the lineup after missing the Pac-12 Preview while representing Team USA at the World Amateur Team Championship. The senior ended up 12 over and 60th among individuals after shooting a final round 75. His 60th-place finish was his highest during his Huskies' career.
"It was a tough week for Willy. He was really sick," Thurmond said. "It's been a really long year for him and he didn't have anything left this week."
Fellow senior Charlie Hughes also shot 75 in the final round. He ended up 11 over and tied for 56th.
Freshman Tyler Salsbury shot a non-counting 80 and ended up tied for 78th overall.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers rode a final round 67 to a four-shot victory over the rest of the 79-man field.
Every team finished double-digits over par, led by host Georgia Tech. The Rambling Wreck shot 10-over 874 to beat UCLA by one shot.
The rest of the field was jumbled and the Huskies were only four shots off the pace set by third-place USC. The Trojans ended up at +15, followed by Virginia (+16), Stanford (+17) and Duke and Clemson (+18).
Washington finished at 19-over 883. They shot 1-over 289 on Sunday, the third best round of the day.
The Huskies conclude their fall schedule Oct. 29-30 at the Stanford Classic. The match-play formatted tournament will be played at Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Washington will be without Pan, who will be playing in Asia at the end of the month. Williams' status is undetermined for the final tournament.
