SEATTLE - The 12th-seed Washington Huskies became the first team to punch its ticket into Super Regionals with a 7-5 come-from-behind win on Saturday over BYU. Down 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies scored five runs to take command of the game and advance to the next round for the sixth time in seven years under head coach Heather Tarr.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 37-14 on the season while BYU completed its 2011 season at 40-18.
The Seattle Regional was paired with the Columbia Regional with the two winners going to Super Regionals. The Columbia Regional was rained out on Friday and played five games on Saturday. Missouri lost the second game of the Regional to DePaul and will play Illinois State later tonight in an elimination game. If Missouri loses then UW will host next weekend. If Missouri wins tonight, they will have to defeat DePaul twice on Sunday and if the Tigers are able to do that then the Huskies will play in the Super Regionals in Missouri.
Both teams scored in the first inning as BYU got a run two hits and then an error on UW. Freshman pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) had a huge strikeout and then sophomore Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) made a nice throw to senior Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) at third for a pick off. Inglesby struck out BYU's hottest hitter on the weekend, Caschjen Atagi, looking for the final out.
UW's run in the first came on a ground out by Stuart as junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) scored on the play. Pohlman led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base.
The Huskies took their first lead of the game in the third getting one run on a double to left center by Inglesby as senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) scored.
The Cougars exploded for three run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and leave many fans at Husky Softball Stadium in silence.
After a scoreless fifth for UW, the Huskies rallied for five runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead for good, even though BYU got one run in the seventh.
The huge inning started when freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) drew a walk. Sophomore Maggie Wagner (Woodinville, Wash.) reached on a bunt single and Pohlman hit a blooper to left field to load the bases with no outs. Williams hit a double off of the left field walk to tie the game at 4-4. Inglesby then singled to left as Salling and Williams scored the final two runs.
Inglesby got the win in the circle (25-8), pitching every inning for UW on the weekend. She allowed just four earned runs on nine hits. At the plate, she also led the team with three hits and two RBI. The Huskies had 10 hits as a team.
BYU used three pitchers as Paige Affleck started, going 3.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Tori Almond entered in relief and took the loss (10-4), allowing four earned runs on six hit in 2.1 innings. Hannah Howell got the final two strikeouts of the sixth.
