Williams Rallies In Final Round Of Insperity/ASU Invitational

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Saturday was a day that Chris Williams and the rest of the Husky men's golf team would like to forget. The team combined to shoot a season-high 313 and Williams a season-worst 79 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The round put the Huskies in 14th out of 17 teams at the Insperity/Augusta State Invitational.
While the No. 22 Huskies were never able to recover and improve their standing on the leaderboard, they did shoot a respectable 3-over 291 in Sunday's final round anchored by a 67 from Williams.
The 5-under by Williams equaled the best round of the day by any of the 93 competitors. It helped Williams jump from 54th in the standings to 18th.
"He bounced back great," said Husky Coach Matt Thurmond of his sophomore from Moscow, Idaho. "Chris was exceptional down the stretch and it was good to see him get back up to the top of the leaderboard."
Williams and the rest of the Huskies teed off from No. 10 and he was out of the gates quick with a pair of birdies. He would make the turn to No. 1 with just one bogey coming on the 18th hole. From there, he took off.
Williams birdied No. 4, 5 and 7 before wrapping up his tournament with a final birdie on No. 9. Williams ended up at +1 overall (217).
The six birdies by Williams were matched by senior Tze Huang Choo. Unfortunately, Choo also had to count five bogeys and a double bogey and ended up the round at +1. He was tied for 67th overall with a 227 (+11).
Charlie Hughes shot a 3-over 75 and ended up at +7 for the tourney. He tied for 46th at 223.
Cory McElyea and Ty Chambers each shot a 76 on Sunday. McElyea ended up at +14 and tied for 75th, while Chambers was +19 and tied for 83rd.
Oklahoma State held on to win the team title by one stroke. Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State ran away with a five shot victory.
The Huskies will remain in Augusta through Monday to watch the practice round of the Masters. It will mark the first time any of the players have ever been to famed Augusta National Golf Course.
