STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington had a strong finish in the first day at the Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships, but the Huskies find themselves facing an uphill battle if they want to win a third-straight crown.
The Huskies went into the Stanford Golf Course clubhouse eighth after 36 holes, 15 shots back of leader USC. When it was all said and done, it could have been worse for the Dawgs, but UW finished strong, with the six Huskies combining to shoot 7-under during the final four holes of the evening round at the par-70 track.
"We said that we wanted to have a good afternoon round, which we had not done so recently," said UW coach Matt Thurmond. "I was disappointed after 27 holes, but we finished strong and there is still a lot of golf to play."
Thurmond only has to look back one season to exemplify to his team that they are still in the thick of things. Last year, when the Huskies ended up with a three stroke victory at the Pac-10 Championship, they trailed by 15 strokes after two rounds and seven after three rounds.
As has been the norm for Washington throughout the season, sophomores Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams led the way for the Dawgs. Hughes and Williams are tied for 11th overall at +1.
Hughes shot a 1-under 69 in the morning round and 2-over 72 in the evening, which was highlighted by an eagle on No. 16. Williams shot a 71 in the morning and a 70 in the evening. He birdied two of the final four holes to get back to even.
Senior Tze Huang Choo is next among Huskies on the leader board at +4 overall and tied for 21st.
Kevin Spooner and Cory McElyea are tied for 42nd, while Trevor Simsby is 58th.
USC's Martin Trainer and Oregon State's Alex Moore are tied among individuals at -4 (136).
The third round starts tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. PT.
In other Husky men's golf news, UW assistant Garrett Clegg was named one of eight semifinalists for the Strickland Award, handed out annually to college's top assistant coach.
