SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Washington shot a 21-over 371 on Sunday in the final round of the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament and the team finished tied for 11th out of 15 teams in the Huskies final tune up before the Pac-10 Championships.
Washington ended up at +63 (1113) overall in the six-man formatted tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz. UCLA took home the team title at +16 overall. They notched a six-stroke win over USC.
Finishing outside the top-10 among teams on the final leaderboard is unfamiliar territory for Coach Matt Thurmond, but his team has now done so in back-to-back tournaments. The results have left the Huskies' 10th year coach scratching his head in search of remedies.
"I don't really have any good answers," said Thurmond when asked what went wrong this weekend. "We really had a good week of practice and I thought we were poised to play well. The course set up well for us too ... we just could not pull it together."
Chris Williams led the Huskies' individual efforts shooting a 2-over par 72 on Sunday to end up +6 overall in the 54-hole tournament. He finished in a tie for 19th out of 92 individuals.
Freshman Trevor Simsby was the only other Husky among the top-50 individuals. He ended up tied for 33rd at +10 (220).
Junior Kevin Spooner was 61st (+16), followed by Charlie Hughes (+17, 64th), Tze Huand Choo (+24, 82nd) and Cory McElye (+25, 84th).
The Huskies will have a week to gather their thoughts and hone their games before the Pac-10 Championships, which are April 29-May 1 at Stanford Golf Course.
