LOS ANGELES - The task of upsetting the 17th-ranked Bruins on their home courts was a challenge to begin with, but the 20th-ranked Husky women's tennis team had an even tall order today as they were down to just five players due to injury. Washington had to give away third doubles and sixth singles, and fell to UCLA, 6-1, this afternoon. Junior Denise Dy scored the lone point with a win at the No. 1 singles spot.
The Huskies (8-6, 0-2 Pac-10) were without freshman Andjela Nemcevic, their number four singles player all season. Nemcevic suffered a knee injury yesterday at USC and had to retire despite leading. She was out today and UW did not have a replacement, so the Huskies had to default at third doubles and sixth singles, so when UCLA scored a quick 8-0 win at second singles, Washington was effectively down 2-0.
Dy bounced back from her first loss of the dual season on Friday to handle 73rd-ranked McCall Jones in the top singles match, 7-5, 6-4. Dy's All-American counterpart, senior Venise Chan, saw her 13-match win streak ended in a tough battle against Noelle Hickey at second singles. Chan took the first set, 6-3, but Hickey rallied to take the next two, 6-1 and 6-4.
The rest of the matches went to the Bruins in straight sets. 64th-ranked Andrea Remynse defeated junior Samantha Smith, 6-1, 6-1, at third singles. At No. 4, Pamela Montez earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over senior Aleksandra Krsljanin, and Carling Seguso won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 over Vanja Radunovic.
Five of UW's six losses have come to Top-20 teams. Next week the Huskies will look for their first conference win against Oregon and Washington State, both of which are once again on the road.
