FULLERTON, Calif. - Six games in four days at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., and the No. 4/4 UW softball team came out of it with a 4-2 record and improved to 23-2 overall.
The Huskies got a hard-fought win over Illinois (11-11) in the morning game Sunday, 3-2 in nine innings and then defeated a pesky Boise State team (15-10) by a score of 4-1 in the afternoon.
Game One - No. 4/4 Washington 3, Illinois 2 (9 innings)
Box Score
It was the third extra inning game of the year for UW as the Huskies improved to 2-1 in those games and 2-0 in nine inning games. It was also the second-straight extra inning game as the Huskies fell to No. 9/8 Oklahoma 7-6 in eight innings on Saturday.
Illinois took an early 1-0 lead in the third as Alex Booker scored on a double to left by Danielle Zymkowitz. Junior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) got her second start of the season and allowed one run on four hits in 2.1 innings.
Junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) tied the game in the third with an inside the park home run. She hit the ball to left field and it rolled to the fence. The left fielder was playing up and it gave the speedy Pohlman time to go all the way home.
Zymkowitz scored in the sixth as the Illini re-took the lead 2-1.
In their half of the sixth, the Huskies tied the game as junior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) reached base on an error. Sophomore Maggie Wagner (Woodinville, Wash.) pinch ran for her and scored when senior Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) reached on a second Illini error in the inning.
After no runs in the seventh or the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule, sophomore Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) started the ninth on second. Freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) hit an infield single and her classmate Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) walked to load the bases for Pohlman. Pohlman hit the game-winning single to left to drive in Wright.
The Huskies had nine hits in the game led by senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and Pohlman with two each.
Inglesby got the win in the circle improving to 12-1 on the season. She pitched 6.2 innings in relief, allowing just one run (unearned) on one hit with six strikeouts.
Game Two - No. 4/4 Washington 4, Boise State 1
