SEATTLE - Despite rain delays all morning that pushed back all of the games until nearly 2 p.m., the No. 5/6 Husky softball team still got two games in, winning both and improving to 19-0 on the year. The Huskies are one of two teams, along with Michigan who are still undefeated.
Game 1 - No. 5/6 Washington 10, USC Upstate 7
Box Score
Friday night the Huskies handed the Spartans their first loss of the season and USC Upstate fought hard to revenge the loss but UW rallied for the victory.
USC Upstate took an early lead in the first off of Husky starter, sophomore Baily Harris (Longview, Wash.). Two runs were credited to Harris in the inning. Junior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) entered to pitch in relief getting two strikeouts to end the inning.
The Huskies started to come back in the first as junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) singled to right. Fellow junior Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) walked and they both advanced on a wild pitch. However, the rain was too much to continue playing and the teams sat through a one-hour rain delay.
Once play resumed, the Huskies were shutout in the bottom of the first as Morgan Childers struck out two husky batters.
USC Upstate extended its lead to 5-0 in the second as Lauren Quevedo hit a three-run home run.
With six runs in the third, UW took the lead for good and finally got to Childers, who allowed eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.
Sophomore Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) singled to center to score two. Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) hit her third home run of the season and the first grand slam by a Husky in 2011 to put UW on top 6-5.
Shawna Wright (sophomore from Lancaster, Calif.) hit a two-run home run to left in the fourth.
In the fifth, UW got two more as freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) singled and reached second on a throwing error by the first baseman. Junior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) singled and drove in a run. She also scored a run on a double by Pohlman to left.
USC Upstate got back within three in the sixth but couldn't catch the Huskies.
UW had 10 hits in the game to the Spartans 12. Inglesby got the win in the circle, improving to 9-0. She allowed one earned run on six hits in 4.2 innings. She also struck out a career-high eight batters.
Game 2 - No. 5/6 Washington 16, Seattle U 2 (5 innings)
Box Score
Seattle U got two runs in the first to take the lead but those are the only runs they would put on the board and UW responded with 16 in the first two innings.
The Huskies had 12 hits in the game, led by Pohlman, Smith and freshman Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) with two each. Smith led the team with four RBIs and Pohlman scored three runs.
Fa'asua hit her third home run of the season to left field, a three-run shot to seal the game.
Smith hit a three-run homer of her own in the bottom of the second. It was her ninth of the season, a team-high.
Freshman Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) pitched her first career complete game as a Husky going all 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits with a career-high six strikeouts. She improves to 4-0 on the year.
