SEATTLE - Only five unbeaten teams remained entering the weekend and two met in game three of the Husky Softball Classic Friday night. In the 2011 softball home opener, the No. 5/6 Huskies (17-0) handed the USC Upstate Spartans (25-1) their first loss of the season. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools.
The Spartans rallied to defeat Oregon State in the first game of the day, 2-1, to remain unbeaten until the meeting with the Huskies.
"I think we are doing good things," said head coach Heather Tarr. "We haven't been worried about winning or anything about just getting better. We just want to get one-percent better in batting practice. We have accepted a new idea about the game. It is 21 outs. We will get them however we get them."
Washington got on the board in the first inning as junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) hit an infield single to lead off inning. She scored on a two-out single by sophomore Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) to left field.
USC Upstate fought back to take the lead in the third off of Husky starter Whitney Jones. The freshman from Upland, Calif., picked up her third win of the year, allowing just two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings.
Lauren Quevedo had a two-out single that drove in the only two runs of the game for the Spartans.
However, their lead didn't last long as the Huskies took the lead for good with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
Wright singled to right and sophomore Maggie Wagner (Woodinville, Wash.) pinch ran and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep right field by Jones to tie the game 2-2.
Pohlman singled with two outs to drive in two Huskies. Both runs were unearned to take a 4-2 lead. Senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) reached on an error as junior Taylor Smith (Olympia, Wash.) and Pohlman scored.
With the bases loaded, sophomore Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) hit a two-RBI double for an 8-2 lead.
Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) started the game as the designated player. With one out in the sixth, she singled to left center and scored on a wild pitch. Fellow freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) singled and scored the game-ending run on a single by junior Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.).
UW had 13 hits in the game and was led by Pohlman with three.
Junior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) and Inglesby pitched 3.0 perfect combined innings in relief with four strikeouts.
For USC Upstate, Hannah Alexander was credited with the loss. She allowed eight runs, just two earned in 4.0 innings.
The Huskies and Spartans will have a rematch on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. UW will also face Seattle U at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and audio/video streaming will be available on www.gohuskies.com. Both games tomorrow will air on KIXI 880 AM with John Cowley and Mike Brown.
