SAN DIEGO - The No. 10/11 Huskies fought through the rain today at the University of San Diego to take game one of the tournament vs. Sacramento State, 7-4 in five innings.
The second game of the day for UW vs. Fresno State has been canceled. Tomorrow's games will be delayed. Stay logged on to www.gohuskies.com for a complete schedule for the rest of the weekend.
The Washington-Sacramento State game was rain delayed for about 30 minutes after the fourth inning and the tarp was put on the field. The two teams completed an official game which was at first suspended and later confirmed to be official. The Huskies improve to 6-0 while the Hornets drop to 1-4.
The Huskies exploded for a six-run first inning, led by senior Jenn Salling who doubled to right center. Kimi Pohlman singled and Niki Williams walked. Shawna Wright singled to center followed by a walk to Jerrin Fa'asua. It was 3-0 after Morgan Stuart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jenna Clifton also walked with the bases loaded. A bases loaded double by Salling scored two for a 6-0 lead.
With one out in the third, Taylor Smith singled to left, stole second and reached third on throwing error by catcher. She scored the seventh run of the game on a bunt by Pohlman.
Sacramento State scored one run in the fourth off of starting pitcher Jenna Clifton.
After the rain delay, the Hornets got three runs off of Whitney Jones in the fifth and Kaitlin Inglesby came in to get the final out of the inning.
Clifton got her first win of the season in the circle, striking out three. Inglesby picked up her first career save.
