LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Sophomore Cory McElyea fired a 4-under 68 and freshman Cheng-Tsung Pan shot 69 to lead the Husky men's golf team during the first round of The Prestige at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif. on Sunday.
Washington sits tied with Stanford in second at 8-under 280 at the Greg Norman designed course. Oregon leads the 16-team field after combining to shoot 9-under 279.
Arizona State and San Francisco are tied for fourth at -6 in the 54-hole tournament that runs through Tuesday.
"Part of me is frustrated in that I think we could have shot 15 or 20-under," said Husky Head Coach Matt Thurmond. "The course played pretty easy today and it was there for the taking. It could have been a pretty special day for us."
"The other side of it is that we're one stroke out of the lead in a really great field in a big tournament," Thurmond continued. "That's great news."

Washington remains in the title hunt despite a disappointing first day from its star Chris Williams. The No. 7 ranked amateur in the world shot 3-over 75 to finish fifth among Huskies on Sunday. He is tied for 59th.
Williams saw his very first shot of the day go out of bounds and hit another ball into the water later in the round.
"It was just an odd day for him," Thurmond said about Williams. "He just never really got anything going."
The story of the day for the Huskies was the play of McElyea. The second-year player from Santa Cruz, Calif. shot a bogey-free round and is tied for fourth, two strokes behind co-leaders Spencer Fletcher of Arizona State and Andrew Yun of Stanford.
"He had a good start and was really just solid," said Thurmond about McElyea, who shot his first-ever under 70 round in his college career. "He maitained it throughout the round and it was really a great day from him. He was flawless."
Pan equaled McElyea with four birdies, but also carded one bogey on the par-5 16th hole. He is tied for 8th.
Junior Charlie Hughes is the only other Husky under par after 18 holes. He shot 2-under 70 and is tied for 12th.
Hughes notched a UW high five birdies, but also had three bogeys.
Sophomore Trevor Simsby shot 73 and is tied for 38th. Through 10 holes, Simsby was near the top of the leaderboard at 3-under but suffered through a three-hole stretch of double bogey, bogey, bogey to end his round.
Play continues on Monday with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.
