LA QUINTA, Calif -- Cheng-Tsung Pan announced to the rest of the college golf world his presence by firing a 7-under 65 in Tuesday's final round of The Prestige at PGA WEST to beat a daunting field of competitors and help Washington to a second-place team finish.
Pan, golf's ranked 22nd according to World Amateur Golf Rankings, cruised to a 3-shot victory in just his second college tournament. He shot 201 overall (-15) to beat 2010 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year Eugene Wong of Oregon. Todd Baek of San Diego State and Alex Ching of San Diego tied for third at -10.
"He was really able to hit the big shots when we needed them," Husky Coach Matt Thurmond said of his freshman from Taiwan. "It was fun to see all the difficult shotw on the back nine and him hitting them perfectly. That's rare for any golfer, let alone a freshman under such immense pressure."
Despite Pan's best efforts, Washington fell two strokes short of earning the team title. That honor goes to Oregon, who combined to shot 5-under par over the final three holes to pass the Huskies on the leaderboard. Washington went 1-under during that same stretch of golf.
"Oregon was playing great and we were playing great," Thurmond said. "It was just a matter of who ever was going to make the last birdie was going to win. Oregon made a couple of late birdies that were impressive and they won."

Top-ranked Stanford finished third behind Washington, six strokes back.
The story of week for the Huskies was Pan. He improved each day, shooting 69-67-65. During the 54-hole tournament, he marked only two bogeys on his score card.
"It feels great," said Pan. "On the other hand, I feel disappointed that we didn't win as a team."
"Overall, I feel really good about the win and that all my practice paid off."
Pan was not alone in helping the Huskies to the top of the leaderboard. Juniors Chris Williams and Charlie Hughes each finished 5-under and tied for 17th.
Williams bounced back from a first round 75 and improved over the final two days. He shot 69 and 67 to secure a top-20 finish.
Hughes was consistent throughout the tourney. He fired 70's each of the first two days before ending with a 71 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Cory McElyea, who was tied for fourth at the tournament after day one, ended up tying for 34th. He followed up a 68 with a 73 and 75 to end up even-par 216.
Trevor Simsby shot 74 on the last day and ended up at +2 overall. He tied for 47th.
