Chan, Dy Take Michigan Invite Doubles Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - All-Americans Denise Dy and Venise Chan led the Husky women's tennis team to its best showing of the weekend on the final day of the Michigan Invitational at UM's Varsity Tennis Center. Dy and Chan each won their singles matches and then earned their third win of the weekend in doubles to win the tourney title.
In the round-robin style tourney, the Huskies were matched up in singles play with 16th-ranked Georgia Tech in the morning, then took on 13th-ranked Tennessee in doubles play to follow. The tourney is structured like a dual match, but with players earning individual points for singles and doubles wins, corresponding to their spot in the lineup.
Chan and Dy took the doubles title with 24 points, the most possible, after posting No. 1 doubles wins over Georgia Tech, Michigan, and Tennessee today. Their 8-4 win over Tennessee's Pluskota and Boren could wind up being all the more impressive down the road. The Vols pair is unranked currently, but Pluskota was part of the No. 1-ranked team in the country last year before her partner graduated, while Boren is in the top-20 in singles. Tennessee's No. 2 doubles team of Nichols and Alda is actually ranked ninth in the country.
In singles, Chan and Dy also picked up big wins to finish 2-1 in singles play for the weekend. Sixth-ranked Dy handled Christina Ngo at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-2, while Chan earned an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over 39th-ranked Jillian O'Neill at No. 2. The win should provide more solid rankings points for Chan who looks to move back up towards the Top-20 after seeing her ranking drop to 55th after the fall.
Freshman Andjela Nemcevic earned her first win of the weekend after two close losses. Playing in the No. 4 singles spot, she held off Sasha Krupina, 6-4, 7-5.
The Huskies won't get much time at home this week, as they will be back on the road for the year's first dual matches this weekend. This Saturday, Jan. 22, the Huskies will be in Provo, Utah to take on BYU. The next day they'll face future Pac-10 foe Utah in Salt Lake City.
