
Lee and Taylor Win Big Vs. ASU

MARANA, Ariz. - All-Americans Richard Lee and Nick Taylor won their head-to-head battles but No. 4 seed Arizona State beat the No. 2 seed Huskies 3-2 in the final day of action at the Calloway Collegiate Match Play Championships on Tuesday.
Lee defeated Scott Pinckney 5 and 4 at the number two spot, while Taylor beat Jesper Kennegard 5 and 3 in the battle of No. 1's. The two seniors teed off on No. 14 and went 1 up right out of the gate and were able to build on their lead from there. By No. 18, Taylor was 3-up, while Lee was 2-up. They each cruised the rest of the way to easy victories.
Conversely, Arizona State was able to secure big victories at No. 4 and No. 5. ASU's James Byrne beat Charlie Hughes 4 and 3, and Braxton Marquez took down senior Chris Killmer 5 and 4.
UW freshman Chris Williams waged a back-and-forth battle with Knut Borsheim that came down to the final couple of holes. Borsheim took birdied No. 7 with seven holes left and never relinquished the lead. On No. 14, the final hole of the match, Williams carded a bogey, while Borsheim parred to win 2-up.
No. 15 New Mexico, who beat the Huskies 3-2 in the first round, took out No. 8 USC on a 19th hole playoff, 2-2-1, to claim the tournament championship.
Washington was 1-3 in the three-day tournament and will regroup next Friday, April 2 at the ASU Thunderbird Tournament at the Karsten Course.
