SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Washington wrapped up its fall season with some impressive results at the SDSU Fall Classic II this weekend, highlighted by bracket victories for senior Lina Xu and junior Samantha Smith.
While All-Americans Venise Chan and Denise Dy were competing in New York this weekend at the ITA National Indoor Championships, the rest of the Huskies were sharpening their skills at the Aztec Tennis Center, where San Diego State hosted UW, Auburn, Kansas, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, and UC Irvine.
Xu and Smith both went 3-0 to capture their respective singles draws. Smith posted perhaps the best win of the weekend, upsetting 65th-ranked Alicia Aguilar of San Diego State in the finals of the Silver Draw, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. She dominated her two matches leading up to the final as well.
Xu continued a strong fall with three-straight wins. Friday she bageled Kate Goff of Kansas, 6-0, 6-0. Saturday she stopped a comeback attempt by Plamena Kurteva of Auburn, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Today she capped her weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 win over SDSU's Sierra Ellison.
Washington nearly added a third bracket win as freshman Andjela Nemcevic come one tiebreaker away from the Pink Draw title. Nemcevic defeated Miranda Young of UC Irvine and Olicia Colman of San Diego State in straight sets to reach the final. Facing another Aztec today, Julia Wais, Nemcevic took the first set, 6-3, but lost the second, 6-2. The two fought to a tiebreaker in the third, but Wais stepped up with a 7-1 win.
Also having a strong weekend was senior Vanja Radunovic. Despite an opening round match to 51st-ranked Julia Trunk on Friday, Radunovic came back with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cara Brown of San Diego and a 6-1, 6-0 victory over UC Irvine's Hayley Young.
Leading the way in doubles play was the pair of Nemcevic and Smith, as they went 2-1 with wins over teams from Auburn and Kansas.
The Huskies will pick things up again in mid-January, starting with the Michigan Invitational on January 14.
