FLUSHING, N.Y. - Husky All-American Denise Dy once again reached the final eight of a national singles tournament, but for the second time this fall was stymied by the nation's top-ranked player. Dy made the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships for the second time, but fell one win short of equaling her semifinal run from a year ago.
Held for the first time at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the National Indoors assembles the most select field of any of the three national tourneys in college tennis.
In the round of 16 this afternoon, Dy drew highly-touted freshman Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. The Cardinal rookie claimed the first set, 6-3, but then Dy dug in and took the second set to a tiebreaker, which she pulled out to force a third set. After falling behind 4-1 in the final set, Dy rallied once again to take six of the final seven games for a 7-5 victory.
Dy had to return to the court shortly thereafter for her quarterfinal match-up against Cal's Jana Juricova, the No. 1-ranked player in the country and the defending champion this weekend. At last month's ITA All-American Championships, Juricova knocked out Dy in the semifinals. The two met one round earlier this tournament, but the circumstances were similar. Juricova had cruised through her first two rounds, losing just seven games over four sets, while Dy had gone three sets in both of her matches. A fresher Juricova was able to post a 6-2, 6-1 victory to make the semis.
Despite the defeat, this marks the fourth time in the past five national tournaments that a Husky has advanced at least to the quarterfinals. The next individual national tourney won't come until the NCAA Championships in May of 2011.
Senior All-American Venise Chan also competed in the consolation singles draw today. Similar to her first round main draw match yesterday, Chan took the first set, but then couldn't find her rhythm to close out the match. Michaela Kissell of Marshall came back to get a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win, ending Chan's weekend.
