FLUSHING, N.Y. - Junior Denise Dy claimed an opening round victory today as the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships opened for the first time at the new indoor courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Husky All-American raised her level as the match went on to earn a comeback victory and reach the round of 16.
A semifinalist at this tournament a year ago, Dy, seeded fifth, had a slow start against USC's Danielle Lao. The 28th-ranked Trojan took the first set, 6-4, but Dy came on strong in the second set with a 6-3 victory. In the third set, Dy was in full flight, cruising to a 6-0 win. Already this fall it is her fourth win over a Top-40 opponent. In Friday's round of 16, she will take on highly touted Stanford freshman Nicole Gibbs.
Fellow UW All-American Venise Chan followed a similar script to Dy but had the opposite outcome unfortunately. Facing sixth-ranked Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, Chan took the first set, 6-3, but then Mosolova seized the momentum and leveled the match with a 6-3 second set win and won 6-0 in the third. Chan will compete in the consolation draw on Friday.
The most select of the three national tournaments that dot the college tennis calendar, the ITA National Indoors feature just 32 players in singles and 16 doubles teams. The field is comprised of champions from USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the USTA/ITA National Small College "Super Bowl" champions, the doubles champions and singles quarterfinalists from the Men's and Women's All-American Championships, as well as at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.
