ITA All-American Championships Singles Draw
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Husky standouts Venise Chan and Denise Dy jumped right into the 2010-11 season today with first round match-ups against Top-40 opposition, and both came through with victories as the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships began at the Riviera Tennis Club. Chan and Dy both moved into the Round of 16 at the prestigious national event.
This marks the second time that Chan and Dy have both made at least the Round of 16 at one of the three college tennis majors. Last season, Dy made the semifinals and Chan made the quarterfinals at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Hundreds of players enter the All-American Championships every year, many going through numerous qualifying rounds in hopes of reaching the 32-player main draw. Chan and Dy both earned automatic entry into the main draw, however, by virtue of their preseason singles rankings. Dy is ranked seventh and seeded fifth this week, while Chan is ranked ninth and seeded seventh. Last year Chan made the semifinals at the All-American Championships, the best run ever by a Husky.
Chan was up first and had a tough draw for a season-opener in 13th-ranked Josipa Bek of Clemson. But UW's senior All-American came through in a tight three-setter, winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Tomorrow, Chan will go from facing the No. 13 player to the No. 12 player, Michigan's Denise Muresan, who Chan owns one win over from last January. That match is set for 12:30 p.m.
Dy opened up her junior season against 33rd-ranked Nazari Urbina of Texas A&M, who already won three matches in qualifying to reach the main draw. The Husky All-American pulled out the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-4, and then cruised to a 6-2 second set win. She will play at 12:30 on Friday against 29th-ranked Ellah Nze of Duke.
The schedule is for both the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals to be played on Friday.
