MORAGA, Calif. - With Husky All-Americans Denise Dy and Venise Chan making impressive runs at the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles this weekend, the rest of the Husky women's tennis team was just up north in Moraga, California for the St. Mary's Fall Invitational. Five Huskies made the trip, and all picked up multiple wins in singles and doubles.
In the top singles draw, senior Lina Xu and junior Samantha Smith were joined by freshman Andjela Nemcevic, making her collegiate debut. The Serbia native posted a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win in her first match against Gonzaga's Prue Teitzel. She then battled one of the draw's top seeds, Claire Soper of St. Mary's, for three sets before falling just short, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Nemcevic would then add a 6-1, 6-2 win over Miya Jin of LMU in consolation play.
Xu went 2-1 in singles play as well, opening with a come-from-behind win over Sophie Lohscheid of Sacramento State, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, and a 6-1, 6-4 win over Claire Dodge of Gonzaga. Samantha Smith lost her first match against 87th-ranked Alex Poorta of St. Mary's but bounced back with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of San Jose State's Christine Nguyen.
In the White Singles Draw, senior Vanja Radunovic reached the quarterfinals with a walkover win followed by a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yurie Hashiguchi of San Francisco. Senior Aleksandra Krsljanin was 2-1 in singles, losing just one game against Cecilia Gratian of USF, and posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Valerie Cormier of San Jose State.
Two Husky doubles duos were still competing on Sunday, with Xu and Radunovic posting three wins to make the finals of the White draw, before dropping a close 8-6 title match to Zivanovic and Lohscheid of Sacramento State. Smith and Nemcevic dropped their first doubles match in the main Red draw but came back to win the consolation draw, beating teams from Loyola Marymount and San Francisco before getting a walkover win in the final when Stanford's Dillon and Gibbs withdrew due to illness.
The fall season continues in two weeks' time at the ITA Northwest Region Championships, held Oct. 22-26 at Stanford.
