SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Led by seniors Kailey Campbell and Mel Lawrence, the Husky women's cross country team outpaced a half dozen top-30 teams today at the Notre Dame Invitational. Five of Washington's nine competitors today were making their first career starts aside from UW's Sundodger home meet, and two sophomores plus a true freshman finished UW's scoring behind its two seniors, as the third-ranked Huskies took sixth in the loaded field.
Run over 5,000-meters at the Notre Dame Golf Course, the third-ranked Huskies defeated No. 8 Princeton, No. 19 UTEP, No. 21 BYU, No. 23 SMU, No. 24 Iowa, and No. 30 Notre Dame. Defending national champs Villanova got the team win, followed by No. 4 Oregon, No. 2 Florida State, No. 12 New Mexico, and Stony Brook. The Huskies posted 185 points for sixth, a solid day considering the team is still in the process of gelling.
Senior Kailey Campbell was the top finisher for the women, placing 14th overall in 16-minutes, 54-seconds. Campbell was nearly a full minute faster than her 79th-place effort at this same race a year ago, and finished ahead of several 2009 All-Americans such as Ali Smith of Villanova and Amanda Winslow of Florida State. Senior Mel Lawrence competed for the first time this season today, and took 25th in 17:10, a good start for the two-time All-American.
Sophomore Lindsay Flanagan, the Sundodger Invitational champion, was 30th overall in 17:18, and sophomore Kayla Evans placed 48th in 17:30. Freshman Libby Miller capped Washington's scoring with a 68th-place effort in 17:42, followed by redshirt freshmen Justine Johnson and Grace Green in 80th and 127th, respectively. Freshman Megan Goethals, who was UW's No. 2 runner at the Sundodger, never felt well today but fought through to the finish, taking 165th. Fellow true freshman Mackenzie Carter also placed 133rd in 18:27.
"We had to battle today and rely on a lot of young women who are still adjusting to this whole process and there are going to ups and downs for sure," said head coach Greg Metcalf. "All in all I thought we did a pretty good job and we beat a very good Princeton team today. Kailey Campbell I thought ran with a lot of poise, and Mel Lawrence was a little rusty and hasn't raced in a long time so this was just the tip of the iceberg for her. Lindsay, Kayla, and Libby all had solid days, and Megan will shake this off and still make a huge difference for our team this year."
The Husky men were led by Joey Bywater, but the sophomore unfortunately was missing his two junior cohorts that he has come to run well with at UW's first two wins this season. Junior Max O'Donoghue-McDonald, the individual champ at the Sundodger two weeks ago, had back issues and was unable to go today. Junior Cameron Quackenbush never felt well today and was unable to finish the race, dropping out about three miles.
Bywater finished the 8,000-meter run in 25:05, placing 63rd overall. Redshirt freshmen Michael Miller was 132nd, as UW finished 19th overall.
"Max wanted to go, and it pained him not to be out there, but it was not worth the risk today with a long season still ahead," said Metcalf. "I was proud of the efforts from Gareth Gilna and Taylor Carlson, but we have got to fix some things after today. We'll work hard over the next two weeks and come back to Indiana for Pre-Nats and aim for a much different result."
Pre-Nationals are the next stop for the Dawgs, back in Terre Haute, Indiana on Oct. 18. That's the last race between now and the Pac-10 Championships, which Washington will host on October 30 at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle.
