MANOA, Hawai'i - Overcoming a long layoff and windy conditions at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex, the Washington women's tennis team defeated Cal Poly, 6-1, in a neutral site match. It was the first of three matches in four days for the Huskies (10-5) during their spring break in the Aloha State.
With finals last week, the Huskies had not played since March 13, and had to deal with gusting winds and a talented Mustangs team. UW proved up to the task, claiming the doubles point and five singles matches.
Sophomore Venise Chan, ranked 27th, earned her sixth win over a ranked opponent this season, dictating play against 71st-ranked Brittany Blalock and winning easily, 6-2, 6-3.
At second and third singles, freshmen Denise Dy and Samantha Smith both posted straight set victories. Dy defeated Suzie Matzenauer, 6-3, 6-4, while Smith took the first set against Whitney Peterson, 6-4, before Peterson retired at 4-4 in the second set.
In the No. 5 singles spot, junior Joyce Ardies gradually turned the match in her favor after a first set loss to Diane Filip. Ardies took the second set, 6-3, then cruised in the third set, 6-1. She improves to 19-6 overall in singles play.
Junior Aleksandra Malovic earned a routine 6-3, 6-3 win over Cal Poly's Shannon Brady in the No. 6 singles match.
In doubles, Ardies and Dy continue to gel at the No. 1 spot, as they blanked Blalock and Wong, 8-0, in just their second match together. Smith and sophomore Lina Xu clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Malec and Brady.
Tomorrow the Dawgs will face the host Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine, at 2 p.m. Pacific. Friday, Washington will face 33rd-ranked Illinois before heading back home.
