TEMPE, Ariz.-- The 11th-ranked Washington softball team dropped a one-run game to No. 9 Arizona State, 2-1, Thursday night at Farrington Stadium. The game, the third one-run contest between the teams this season, gave the Sun Devils the 2-1 series win and improved their record to 48-14 overall and 12-7 in the Pac-10. Washington dips to 34-15 overall and 11-8 in the Pac-10.
The game pitted two of the Pac-10's top pitchers against each other in Washington's Danielle Lawrie and ASU's Katie Burkhart. Lawrie (23-9) took the tough loss as she held Arizona State to two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts, while Burkhart (29-10) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits and fanning 10.
The Huskies jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI-single by Lauren Greer. Junior All-American Ashley Charters was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and moved into scoring position with her 31st stolen base of the season. Greer then hit a slow roller between shortstop and second base, which allowed enough time for Charters to score from second base and put UW on top, 1-0.
The Sun Devils answered in the third inning when Kaitlin Cochran took a 0-2 offering and belted it over the left-centerfield wall for her 16th home run of the season. The hit scored Jessica Mapes, who had reached base on a fielder's choice, and gave ASU the 2-1 lead.
Burkhart did not allow a hit after the first inning, while Lawrie gave up just a single after Cochran's home run.
Washington closes out the Pac-10 season with a pair of games against Pac-10 Champion Arizona Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
