SEATTLE-- A second inning two-run home run by Oregon State's Stefanie Ewing was all the scoring the Beavers needed as OSU defeated Washington softball 2-0 Friday. The loss dips the Huskies to 30-13 on the season and 7-6 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers improve to 34-16 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10.
The two-run shot was the only mistake UW ace Danielle Lawrie (19-8) made in the circle as she scattered five hits and struck out 15. The 15 strikeouts lifts her season total to 315 to surpass All-American Jennifer Spediacci (314) for the No. 2 spot on the UW all-time single-season list. Lawrie set the school record last season with 387 strikeouts.
OSU's Ta'Tyana McElroy (11-5) picked up the victory as she held Washington to four hits and struck out four.
The Huskies threatened in the first inning when All-American Ashley Charter led off with an infield single, stole second base and moved to third on a UW ground out but McElroy got Dena Tyson to strikeout to end the inning.
Washington threatened again in the fifth inning when Lauren Greer led off with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch but McElroy sat the next three Huskies down in order to get out of the jam.
UW attempted a seventh-inning comeback when Tyson doubled down the left field line but McElroy used a strikeout and pop-up to seal the Oregon State victory.
Washington returns to action Saturday when it hosts Oregon at 2 p.m.
