Men's Golfers Finish Sixth At Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - The Washington men's golf team shot a final round score of 12-over 300 to finish sixth at the fourth annual Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Monday.
The Huskies, who had two players finish among the top-10 individuals, ended the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 34-over 898. UCLA, playing in its season-debut, took home the team title at 15-over 879 and was followed by Michigan State (21-over 885) and Northwestern (27-over 891).
The challenge, which featured four Big Ten teams squaring off against four Pac-10 teams, was won by the Pac-10 which ended with a 30.5 to 29.5 advantage in match-play. Oregon (28-over 892), Minnesota (32-over 898), Washington, Oregon State (43-over 907) and Wisconsin (58-over 922) rounded out the team standings.
The Huskies were led by senior Zach Bixler who notched his third-straight Top-10 finish of the fall. Bixler carded a final round score 1-over 73 and finished in a tie for eighth place with Oregon's Derek Sipe at 5-over 221. UW sophomore Nick Taylor was just one stroke behind Bixler, tying for 10th at 6-over 22. Taylor shot a 4-over 76 in Monday's final round.
UW junior John Wise's best round of the tournament came with a 2-over 74 on Monday, after carding rounds of 3-over 75 and 8-over 80 on Sunday. He finished tied for 33rd at 13-over 229. Fellow junior Kellen Eakin, playing in his hometown of University Place, tied for 36th (14-over 230). Sophomore Darren Wallace rounded out UW's lineup, finishing tied for 42nd at 17-over 233. Freshman Kevin Spooner competed as an individual, ending the tournament at 27-over 243 (55th).
Michigan State's Ryan Brehm won medalist honors at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge at 6-under 210. Brehm was one of two players to finish the tournament under par, as runner-up Kevin Chappell of UCLA also did so at 1-under 215. Bruins Craig Leslie and Erik Flores tied for third at even-par 216.
Washington has one more tournament on its fall schedule, the CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle Golf Course in San Martin, Calif., Nov. 5-7.
