Huskies Make Season Debut at ITA Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. - Six Husky women's tennis players opened their 2007 fall seasons with victories today at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford. Ten Huskies in all saw action at the Taube Tennis Center, with four freshmen making their collegiate debuts.
Despite picking up several wins in the Round of 128, the Huskies were stopped in the next round, and will look to pick up wins in the consolation draw over the weekend.
Among familiar Husky faces earning their first wins of the season were seniors Tara Simpson and Allison Rainey, junior Melinda Wong, sophomores Joyce Ardies and Aleksandra Malovic, and freshman Ariel Ohno. Rainey had perhaps the day's strongest effort, running away with a 6-0, 6-1 first round win over Bobbie Englert of Cal. Rainey then faced one of the top player's in the nation, second-seeded Melanie Gloria of Fresno State, and hung tough in the first set before falling, 6-4, 6-1.
Ohno picked up her first career singles win in comeback fashion, losing the first set to Sarah Oudomvilay of San Francisco before firing back with 6-2, and 6-0 wins in the second and third sets. Ohno lost to No. 9-seed Stephanie Kusano of Cal in the Round of 64.
In doubles play, the duos of Malovic and Rainey, and Simpson and Wong each earned wins in their first matches, but fell in the Round of 32.
Play continues through Monday at the Regional. The singles finalists and doubles champion earn automatic bids into November's ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three college tennis majors.
