Huskies Finish Fourth at Hawaiian Classic

Kailua, Hawaii - The 18th-ranked Washington Husky gymnastics team got the 2006 season underway at the Hawaiian Classic in Kailua, Hawaii late Tuesday night and finished fourth among six teams at the competition.
Third-ranked UCLA won the meet with a score of 193.775, No. 13 Oregon State was second with 191.925, while 20th-ranked Arkansas finished third with 190.625. The Huskies (2-3) scored 190.425, while Cal tallied 189.350 and Sacramento State totaled 188.075.
Senior Kelly McDonald (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) and freshman Ashley Houghting (Welland Ont./Northview Heights Secondary) each won events for the Huskies. McDonald scored a 9.850 on bars to win her 15th career event, fifth on bars. Houghting debuted for the Huskies by tying for first on vault with UCLA's Kate Richardson with a score of 9.850.
Junior Chelsea Bakken (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) and sophomore Natalie Gillan (Denver, Colo./Pomona HS) competed all-around for the Huskies. Bakken tallied a fifth-place total of 38.350, while Gillan tallied a 37.400.
The meet was tightly judged all evening as no team scored above a 49 on any one event. UCLA was the only team to tally a 48 or higher on all events. The Huskies did not count a fall on any events and faired best on bars, tallying a 48.075.
Washington returns to the mat Friday, January 13 to face second-ranked Utah at Bank of America Arena at 7:00 p.m. PT.
