Lepp Gets Husky Golfers Off to Solid Start at Highlands Collegiate

Las Vegas, NV - The 24th-ranked Washington men's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship. Washington shot 5-over 293 and trails tournament-leading Arizona State by five strokes. South Carolina and UCLA are tied for second at 290 while top-ranked Oklahoma State is one shot ahead of the Huskies.
The tournament is considered the most elite event in collegiate golf this season outside of the NCAA Championships. Each of the 15 teams in the tournament is ranked in Golfweek's top-25 poll, including the top six squads. The tournament is being contested at the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
Washington's quick start was led by junior James Lepp, who shot 1-under 71. He is in seventh place, trailing South Carolina's Mark Anderson and UCLA's Daniel Im by five strokes. Alex Prugh shot even par and is in 10th place while Erik Olson is 19th at 1-over 73. Joe Panzeri carded a 77 to stand 58th and Travis Andrews shot 79 to tie for 67th.
Lepp was 5-under after his first nine holes but double-bogied the two par-three holes on the back nine to drop back to 1-under overall. Prugh also got off to a quick start and was 4-under after his front nine. He collected five bogies and one birdies over his final nine holes.
The second round of the tournament will take place Saturday and the final 18 holes will be played Sunday. Live scoring of the tournament can be found on the Internet at golfstat.com.
