Sammamish, WA - Second-ranked Pepperdine grabbed the first round lead at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational being held at the Sahalee Country Club. The Waves shot 6-over 294 during the first day of play that was contested in a light rain and cool conditions. Stanford and Arizona State are tied for second at 300. Washington is eighth at 308.
The Waves jumped out to the early lead thanks to top-10 finishes by all four of their scoring players. Eileen Vargas and Carolina Llano both shot 1-over 73 and Stephanie Gelleni and Leanne Bowditch were one shot back at 74. Marina Choi was 25th with a 5-over 77.
Pepperdine has never won the Ihlanfeldt Invitational. The Waves placed fifth at last year's tournament.
UNLV's Da Sol Chung and Stanford's Jenni Tangtipaiboontana share the lead after shooting even par 72. A pack of five players are tied for second at 73 and five more players are two strokes off the lead at 74.
Chung got off to a quick start for UNLV, playing her front nine at 2-under. She posted bogies on 11, 13, 15 and 17 to fall back from the top of the leaderboard before recording a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to tie Tangtipaiboontana for the lead. Tangtiphaiboontana's round was less dramatic. She also made the turn at 2-under but fell back to par with bogies on 12 and 16.
Washington, playing without senior All-American Paige Mackenzie, was led by 3-over 75s by senior Sung Ea Lee and junior Amy Wang. They are tied for 12th overall. Amber Prange is 37th at 78 while Courtney McCracken is 48th at 80 and Kim Shin is 58th at 82. Ashley Bickerton, playing as a individual, shot 77 to stand 25th.
Mackenzie is not playing at the event while representing the United States at The Spirit International Amateur Championship later this week in Houston.
The second round of play is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday's final round will start at 8 a.m. Live scoring of the tournament is available at golfstat.com.
