Husky Golfers Tied for Fifth at NW Invitational

Bremerton - The 20th-ranked Washington men's golf team is tied for fifth place with Minnesota after the opening day of play at the Opus NW Invitational at Gold Mountain's Olympic Course. The Huskies turned in scores of 367 and 370 for a 36-hole total of 17-over 737 in the tournament that features six-man teams with five-man scoring.
USC owns a commanding 19-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round. The Trojans shot 4-under 356 during the morning round to grab a 10-stroke lead over Minnesota. USC built on that margin during the afternoon round with a 1-under 359. The Trojans finished at 715 while Brigham Young holds down second place at 734. Coastal Carolina is third at 735, UC-Irvine is fourth at 736 while Minnesota and the Huskies share fifth place.
USC was led by the efforts of Taylor Wood, who fired rounds of 68 and 71 for a 36-hole total of 5-under 139. He holds a one-stroke lead on teammate Ben Hayes, who shot 69 and 71. UC Davis' Jay Westerlund is tied for second at 140. BYU placed three players in the top seven with Oscar Alvarez finishing fourth at 141, Greg Machtaler fifth at 142 and Jake Ellison seventh at 143.
Washington sophomore Erik Olson owned a two-stroke lead at 66 after the morning round but fell back to 13th place at 1-over 145. Olson's 66 bettered his previous best single-round total by three shots. Washington's Alex Prugh is 14th at 2-over 146. Husky junior James Lepp, making his debut after transferring from Illinois, is tied for 19th at 3-over 147.
The final round of the Opus NW Invitational is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. Washington will tee off from the first hole starting at 7:30. Heavy fog delayed Monday's play and forced the first two rounds to feature shotgun starts. Complete results of the event are available at golfstat.com
Huskies at Idaho
Washington had three players competing as individuals at the Vandal Fall Classic at the Idaho Golf Course Monday. Freshman Zach Bixler tied for 13th with a 54-hole score of 1-under 212. Husky sophomore Reid Rader was 15th at even-par 213 and senior Travis Andrews placed 17th at 215. Loyola Marymount's Jason D'Amore claimed medalist honors with a 10-under 203.
