Post-Match Quotes
Washington Head Coach Patty McCain
On the win: "I think it was great to get a win under out belts. It's been three weeks since we've played and it's just great to shake off the bugs. I think it was a great experience for Fairfield to come out here and play in their first NCAA Championships. For us it was great, we got to play a little bit outside, a little bit inside so depending on what happens tomorrow we'll be ready for both."
On Facing Oregon a Third Time: "I think it's really fitting that in order to get to Athens we have to get through the Ducks. They're a very tough opponent, they're feisty. I'm looking forward to the match, it will be a lot of fun. It's what postseason's all about."
Washington senior Erin Hoe
General Comments: "I think today was a pretty good starter. The match tomorrow is probably going to be a tough one. We've already played them (Oregon) twice this year and won both times but the last time we played there we pretty much squeaked by. We toughed them out 4-3. We've been practicing inside and outside so I think we're prepared for either."
Fairfield Head Coach Jeffrey T. Wyshner
General Comments: "Washington was great, they were everything they were advertised to be. Fantastic team. We had a great year and finished 19-6 overall. I give my girls a lot of credit, we did a lot of things this year we weren't supposed to do. We went into our conference championship seeded third and were able to pull that out with two upsets. We fought all the way through, but Washington was the fourth seeded in the tournament and we knew what to expect and they did a great job. We fought from point one to the last point played. For us, it was to be here."
NCAA Women's Tennis - First Round
Oregon 4, New Mexico 3
Oregon Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On the win: "It was a great match. I felt like we needed to get the doubles point going in and we did. They were 23-1 in doubles points on the year, so that was huge for us. Other than that, it was a great match, came down to a couple of points and fortunately we came through."
On Daria Panova: "She showed why she's No. 12 in the country. She was just nails when we needed her, in that tie-breaker she stepped up and I knew when she got that second set I felt like there was no way she was going to lose that match."
Oregon Junior Daria Panova
On the third-set win over Maja Kovacek: "I think that girl I played was really good and in the first set she didn't let me get my rhythm and I couldn't execute so I had to change styles which I don't usually do. I just had to adjust and I needed to win for our team. I knew that it would come down to my match and I didn't want to lose. I didn't feel pressure I was just playing for my team. I knew I just needed to win and I wanted my team to be happy."
New Mexico Head Coach Kathy Kolankiewicz
On the match: "First of all we've had a terrific season, we're ending 20-5. Obviously it was a blow to us when we lost our number one doubles play and number five singles player (Sandy Lukowski), but I'm real proud of how our team fought back and really gave it everything they had this match. What can I say? We were two points from winning it at 5-all in that second set tiebreak (No. 1 singles)."
