TUCSON, Arizona -For the third time in Pac-10 play, Washington's sixth-ranked women's tennis team found a way to put together four singles points and earned another hard-fought 4-3 conference win, this time knocking off the 36th-ranked Arizona Wildcats at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center this afternoon. Washington (16-3) lost the doubles point as they have in all four conference duals, but won four of six singles matches to improve to 3-1 in the Pac-10, all wins coming by 4-3 margins.
On this day it would be UW's two seniors and a pair of underclassmen who would carry the Dawgs. 28th-ranked senior Claire Carter continues on her recent tear, as she defeated No. 74 Maja Mlakar, 6-3, 6-4 at second singles. Fellow senior Erin Hoe, ranked 88th, then downed Arizona's Debbie Larocque by an identical 6-3, 6-4 mark at No. 3 singles. The two seniors are going out in style as Carter (Nottingham, England) has won four straight and eight of her last nine matches while Hoe (Mililani, Hawaii) owns wins in 12 of her last 13 duals.
In a battle of freshman at fifth singles, UW's Saskia Nauenberg overcame Arizona's Jessie Rochefort in straight sets for her 23rd singles win of the year. Nauenberg (Santa Cruz, Calif.) shares the team lead in singles wins with Hoe. The No. 6 singles match proved to be decisive, and Washington has struggled in that position this year, going 8-9 overall. But sophomore Stephanie Svanfeldt (Belvedere, Calif.) would not be denied, as she picked up her second-consecutive Pac-10 win, 6-3, 6-3 over Iza Ferreira.
Arizona's only singles wins were both hard earned. At No. 1 singles, 21st-ranked Dianne Hollands came back to upset UW's 18th-ranked Dea Sumantri (Jakarta, Indonesia), 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while at the fourth singles slot, sophomore Dinka Hadzic (Split, Croatia) took the first set to a tiebreak before falling to the Wildcats' Kelly Perry.
Doubles play saw the Husky All-American combo of Carter and junior Dea Sumantri fall to the nation's No. 7 team of Hollands and Mlakar. Hadzic and Hoe won their No. 2 doubles match impressively, but Arizona clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
The win over the Wildcats was just Washington's third all-time, improving to 3-18. Tomorrow the women will head back to Tempe to play their rescheduled match with Arizona State which was slated for Friday but postponed due to rain.
