Blythewood, SC - The 11th-ranked Washington women's golf team "had one of those days," as head coach Mary Lou Mulflur put it, shooting 28-over 316 to start South Carolina's Lady Gamecock Classic in eighth place after the first round. Washington's top round was turned in by Sung Ea Lee, who shot 5-over 77 to place 15th after the opening 18 holes of play.
South Carolina took the early lead, shooting 10-over 298. North Carolina trails the Lady Gamecocks by five strokes and Wake Forest is third at 309.
"We just had one of those days where everyone had a bad round," Mulflur said. "That is going to happen at times during the season. The conditions were perfect. We don't have anyone to blame but ourselves. We have two more rounds to get back into this and make a respectable showing."
Washington's Paige Mackenize was 24th after shooting 7-over 78. Lindsay Morgan and Ashley Bickerton were 30th at 80. Amber Prange shot 84. Prange's older sister, Ashley, a senior at North Carolina, shot 1-under 71 to hold the first round lead.
The tournament continues with 18 holes of play on Saturday and Sunday.
