LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Three Husky women's tennis players had their season opening tournament runs ended today at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Sophomores Saskia Nauenberg and Monika Kolbovic, and freshman Tara Simpson all were eliminated in the second round of prequalifying at the first national tournament of the 2004-05 season.
After notching first round wins on Saturday, Nauenberg and Simpson each fell in straight sets. Nauenberg fell to Tory Zawacki of Duke, 6-1, 6-2. After winning her first collegiate match, Simpson tasted defeat for the first time at the hands of Yulia Rivelis of Penn, 6-2, 6-3. Kolbovic had received a first round bye, but couldn't get by UNLV's Elena Gantcheva, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Next to see action for the Dawgs will be senior All-American Dea Sumantri and junior Dinka Hadzic who will compete in the qualifying doubles draw beginning Oct. 5. The 11th-ranked Sumantri will then make her singles debut Oct. 7 in the main singles draw.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships is the largest tournament in college tennis and crowns the first of three national champions in singles and doubles for the year. The National Indoor Championships in November and NCAA Championships in May complete the national tournament trinity.
