Tucson, AZ - The 10th-ranked Washington women's golf team turned in its best round of the tournament, shooting 8-over 292 to move up to a tie for sixth at the Arizona Invitational at Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson. Pepperdine shot 290 Wednesday to win the event by 14 strokes over second-place USC. The Waves finished at 876. Washington and Vanderbilt tied for sixth at 908.
Husky junior Lindsay Morgan (Walla Walla) posted a career-best round of 68 to finish third overall at 2-over 215. Morgan carded a 75 and 72 during the first two rounds of play. Morgan's previous best collegiate rounds were a 70 she had at the 2001 NCAA Championships and the 2002 NCAA West Regional. Her 215 also bettered her best 54-hole score by four strokes.
"Everyone did a great job today and I'm very excited for Lindsay," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The conditions here were windy and cool the first two days and she battled out there and took advantage today when everything got better. I've known it was just a matter of time before Lindsay broke into the 60s and doing it in this tournament is a great step for her. Over half the field here was pretty high in the rankings and the top four players in the nation also competed, so it shows what Lindsay is capable of for us."
Arizona freshman Eric Blasberg, ranked second nationally, took medalist honors with a 3-under 210. She was the only competitor in the field to break par. It was Blasberg's second title of the season. USC's Makaela parmlid was second at 214. Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, the nation's top-ranked player, tied for ninth at 222.
Husky senior Louise Friberg finished 15th at 223 while freshman Sung Ea Lee was 41st at 232. Michelle Grafos was 63rd at 238 and Katie Kofmehl was 91st at 254.
Washington's next event is the San Jose State's Spartan Invitational March 4-5 at Corral De Tierra in Monterey, Calif.
