20th-Ranked Huskies Fall to No. 12 USC in Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - Jewel Peterson was victorious in the top singles and doubles competitions Friday, leading 12th-ranked USC to a 5-2 victory over No. 20 Washington in a Pacific-10 Conference women's match at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Huskies (13-8) suffered their fifth straight setback and dropped to 1-5 in Pac-10 play. USC (15-6) improved its perfect conference record to 5-0.
Peterson and Tiffany Brymer, the nation's fourth-ranked doubles duo, blanked No. 39 Claire Carter and Darija Klaic of Washington 8-0 in the top doubles match. USC clinched the doubles point as No. 19 Anita Loyola and Luana Magnani won 8-5 in the second spot over Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri.
The Huskies claimed their lone doubles win in the No. 3 position as Ilona Kordonskaya and Andrea Coulter teamed up to defeat Melissa Esmero and Bernadette Bayani 8-6.
Peterson, who is the NCAA's fifth-ranked singles player, defeated No. 62 Carter by a 6-4, 6-1 tally.
The Trojans won three other singles matches. No. 88 Maureen Diaz was a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Sumantri in the No. 3 position, Esmero won 6-2, 6-4 over Coulter in No. 5 singles and Bayani won the sixth singles contest over Kathy Chi by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
Washington won two singles matches, including the No. 2 competition in which Kordonskaya outlasted Loyola 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Gray defeated Brymer 6-3, 7-5 in No. 4 singles.
The Huskies remain in Los Angeles to meet eighth-ranked UCLA on Saturday at noon.
