20th-Ranked UW Beats No. 26 WSU in Women's Tennis

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore Claire Carter registered a victory over ranked opponents in both singles and doubles competition Saturday, helping the 20th-ranked Washington women's tennis team defeat No. 26 Washington State 4-2.
The Huskies snapped a two-game losing streak, improving their record to 11-3. UW was edged 4-3 in its last two outings, against Brigham Young and Fresno State. Washington State lost to the Huskies for the second time this season, dropping to 4-4 overall.
Washington captured the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Carter and Darija Klaic, the nation's 52nd-ranked tandem, won the top doubles competition with an 8-4 upset of No. 16 Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna.
The Husky duo of Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri improved their record to 12-1 with an 8-6 win over Lorena Arias and Orsolya Sallai in No. 2 doubles. Andrea Coulter and Ilona Kordonskaya combined to edge WSU's Zorana Roganovic and Chris Martinez by a 9-8 score in No. 3 doubles.
Carter, listed No. 61 in the national singles rankings, beat No. 68 Perkins 7-5, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Washington also got victories in the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions as Kordonskaya outlasted Arias 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 and Sumantri posted a 6-2, 6-2, straight set decision over Nora Gaal.
The Cougars won two singles matches, including No. 45 McKenna's 6-3, 6-4 decision over No. 40 Klaic in the second spot. Sallai defeated Gray in No. 4 singles by a 6-2, 6-2 tally.
The No. 5 singles match, pitting Coulter against WSU's Martinez, was stopped once Washington clinched the team competition.
The Huskies take a weekend off for final exams and return to action Mar. 23 at home against Montana State.
