San Marcos, CA - The 20th-ranked Washington women's golf team fell just short in a terrific comeback effort to win San Diego State's Aztec Invitational at the Lake San Marcos Country Club. Washington shot a second-round 306 to finish the 36-hole tournament at 628, two strokes behind tournament champion Colorado State.
The Rams began the day 14 strokes ahead of Washington. The Huskies second-round score was the best 18-hole total turned in by any team during the two-day event.
Washington was led on the second day of play by senior All-American Kelli Kamimura, who shot 1-under 72 to place fourth overall at 153. She was the only player during the tournament to post an under-par round. Husky junior Louise Friberg shot 6-over 79 to finish 11th at 157.
Kamimura's top-10 finish was the 18th in her Washington career, tying her with with Husky Dodie Mazzuca for the most in school history.
UNLV's Hwanhee Lee carded a 1-over 74 on Monday, and climbed from third to take medalist honors with a final scored of 4-over 150. Mayumi Motoyama (151) of CSU and Stella Lee (152), the opening round leader from UC Irvine, rounded out the top 3 individuals.
Kent State, ranked 22nd nationally, improved its score by five from Sunday's opening round and finished at 633 to take third. No. 14 Michigan, the tournament's highest ranked squad and a four-tournament winner during the fall season, was 10 back of the Golden Flashes in fourth at 643.
Washington's other scores included a pair of 19th-place finishes by freshman Paige Mackenzie and sophomore Lindsay Morgan at 160. Michelle Grafos shot 167 to place 47th.
