Stanford, CA - The Washington men's golf team turned in its best performance of the fall with a second-place showing at Stanford's Nelson Invitational. The Huskies shot 13-under 271 during the final round to complete the 54-hole event at 4-under 848. Duke won the championship with an 11-under score of 841. Georgia Tech, which held the tournament lead after 36 holes, carded a 3-over 287 on Sunday to drop back to third place at even-par 852.
Washington junior All-American Brock Mackenzie equaled his career best score with a 65 on Sunday to finish tied for second overall at 11-under 202. Mackenzie's score equaled teammate Conner Robbins in the Husky record book for the lowest gross score in a tournament. Robbins shot 202 at last year's Western Intercollegiate. Duke's Leif Olson took medalist honors at 12-under 201. Olson also shot 65 on Sunday.
North Carolina State's Justin Walters and Georgia Tech's Nicholas Thompson tied Mackenzie for second place.
Washington's final round score was just one stroke off the school record of 270 set last year at the Western Intercollegiate. Washington's team total was the fifth lowest gross score in a tournament in Husky history.
During Friday's first round, Husky junior Dan Potter equaled Washington's single-round record with a 7-under 64. His score was the lowest ever recorded by a UW player during the first round of a tournament, breaking the old mark by three strokes.
Rick Doerr, playing in just his second collegiate tournament, shot 4-under 67 on Sunday to finish 20th at 2-over 213. Potter was 23rd at 3-over 216. Corey Prugh was 33rd at 5-over 218, including a 3-under 68 on Sunday. Freshman Dustin Frontis, playing in his first collegiate event, shot even-par 71 during the final round and was 83rd overall at 231.
The Huskies play at The Prestige at Palm Desert Nov. 4-5.
