Men's Soccer Drops Second Game at Diadora Challenge

Omaha, Neb. - The 12th-ranked Washington men's soccer team suffered its second loss of the young season, falling to No. 13 Southwest Missouri State, 3-0, in the second round of the Diadora Challenge at Tranquility Field Sunday evening. It was the second straight upset for the Huskies, who lost to No. 21 Creighton in the first round of the tournament Saturday.
Washington drops to 0-2 on the season while SW Missouri improves to 2-0.
The Huskies again outshot their opponent, with a 16-7 advantage, but could not convert its chances. The Bears got on the board at 22:40 on a straight ahead shot from 13 yards out from Mike Williams. The second goal came early in the second half, at 47:12, from 12 yards out and the final score came from Williams again, an unassisted goal at 86:09.
Junior captain Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.) had three shots for the Huskies. Fellow junior and co-captain Bryn Ritchie (Medford, Ore.) had two shots, as did Greg Foisie (Clovis, NM) and Jake Sagare (Yakima, Wash.). Sophomore goalkeeper Chad Olsen went the distance for the Huskies and recorded two saves in the loss.
Washington returns to action next weekend, with another pair of road games at the adidas Portland Invitational, versus San Diego State Sept. 9 and Akron Sept. 10.
