Portland, Ore. - The Washington men's soccer team continued its offensive flurry, downing Akron, 3-0, en route to claiming the adidas Portland Invitational tournament title Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field.
The Huskies, who improve to 2-2-0, won the tournament after also defeating San Diego State, 3-0, in first round action Saturday. It is the fifth time Washington has won the invitational, in 10 appearances, having also claimed tournament titles in 1990, '92, '96 and '98.
Trevor Frobose, who transferred to Washington from the Air Force Academy this season, had a pair of goals to lead Washington in its second straight win. He capitalized on a combination of passes from Billy Sleeth (Spokane, Wash.) and Greg Foisie (Clovis, NM), to put the Huskies on the board at 19:57. Less than four minutes into the second half, Frobose pounced on a bouncing ball in the box to give Washington a 2-0 lead. Zac Tallman's (Gig Harbor, Wash.) centering pass was deflected several times before Frobose calmly slotted the ball past the Akron keeper.
Washington completed its scoring at 78:49 when Bryn Ritchie (Medford, Ore.) headed in a corner kick by Kai Carroll (Eugene, Ore.). The Huskies outshot Akron, 21-3, as the Zips went home winless after playing to a 2-2 tie with host Portland in the first round.
Husky keeper Chad Olsen (Issaquah,Wash.) had two saves in the contest, while Akron's Kyle Milligan stopped seven shots. It was the second shutout of the weekend for Olsen.
Washington makes its first home appearance when it hosts the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge, Sept. 14 and 16. Oregon State and Santa Clara face each other in the first round Thursday at 5 p.m.,followed by Washington and UC-Irvine at 7:30 p.m. It also marks Washington's first nighttime games at Husky Soccer Stadium, as lights were added early this year.
