
UW Men's Cross Country Team Registers Third-Place Sundodger Finish

SEATTLE -- Eighth-ranked Washington placed three runners among the top-five to easily win the women's team competition while Utah claimed its second straight men's championship Saturday during the eighth-annual Sundodger Invitational cross country meet at Lincoln Park.
The Huskies totaled 28 points to win the Sundodger women's title for the second time in the last three years. Idaho and Texas Tech tied for second place with matching 107-point totals.
Texas Tech's Leigh Daniel won the women's 5,000-meter race by seven seconds with a time of 16-minutes, 52-seconds. Daniel won two NCAA track championships last year, claiming the Indoor 5,000-meter title and the Outdoor 10,000-meter crown.
Washington junior Melinda Campbell, a transfer from Boise State, raced to a runner-up time of 16:59 while teammates Jen Schindler (17:07) and Anna Aoki (17:15) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Puget Sound's Dave Davis won the men's race, covering the 8,000-meter course in 24:43. Second and third place were claimed by Utah runners Travis Hildebrand (24:45) and Chris Merkley (24:50).
Utah had a 47-point winning tally in the men's feature race, followed by Texas A&M (95), Washington (108) and Washington State (118).
The Husky men were led by the sixth-place finish of senior David Bazzi who posted a time of 25:14.
In open competition, Northwest College won the women's race with 45 points, edging Southern Idaho's second-place total of 47. Southern Idaho won the men's open race with 21 points while second-place Alaska-Anchorage scored 56 points.
