LAS VEGAS, Nev. - SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss had three saves and shut out No. 16 Washington Friday night to lead the seventh-ranked Mustangs to a first round win in the UNLV Snickers/FILA Rebel Classic, 1-0. The Huskies, now 2-1-1, will meet host UNLV on Sunday at noon.
An even battle through most of the match, SMU finally beat the Washington defense in the 79th minute when Luis Gonzales scored from right in front of the box. Carl Bussey and Bret Corbin each recorded assists on the goal. It was the first match of the season that Washington has been shut out.
The Huskies outshot the Mustangs, 5-4, but the corner kicks (2) and fouls (11) were even for both teams. UW freshman Chad Olsen minded the net, making one save to three by SMU's Byron Foss.
