SEATTLE - The only question to which the No. 14 Husky men's soccer team will be seeking an answer tomorrow at the NCAA Selection Show is whether it will host a first-round match. Washington earned an automatic berth Sunday with a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts in an NCAA play-in match at Husky Soccer Field.
UW has won nine straight matches and will play in its fifth straight NCAA tournament. The NCAA will announce the pairings and site tomorrow on satellite beginning at 6 p.m. The Huskies will watch the show at The Ram in the University Village.
A scoreless first half which yielded 10 shots gave way to a three-goal, 19-shot second half which UW dominated. Three Husky sophomores teamed for UW's first goal. Benjamin Somoza threw-in to Bryn Ritchie, whose header set up Jake Sagare's second goal of the season at 48:24. Sagare then assisted senior Wes Hart at 72:47 with quick passing at close range for the eventual game-winner, his fourth of the season.
Oral Roberts answered less than two minutes later, with Mike Jones feeding Terry Vaut a long cross, which Vaut headed into the upper right corner of the goal at 74:39.
Washington outshot the Golden Eagles, 23-6, and posted an 8-1 corner-kick advantage in the match that pitted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Mid-Continent Conference champions for the automatic trip to the NCAAs.
"This was a very difficult game to play with the emotions we've had the past few weeks," head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "It's tough to keep going into the well and getting the players up for each game. That was less than our best effort, but it was enough to win. We are now ready to put our focus onto the postseason."
